Profiles of Scholarship Recipients

The joy that learning languages still brings me to this very day is the reason why I have declared a French and German major… I want to show individuals, through my actions and words, that the challenges we face in life will inevitably lead us to discovering and exercising our greatest assets if we merely accept the help of a positive heart and an open mind…this scholarship is fundamental in furthering my studies and relieving the stress of tuition while trying to pay for prescriptions and medical bills as well. As a student with epilepsy, I want to thank you for making it your mission to have an impact on the lives of those with disabilities.

— SHELBY L.
Recipient of the Jane Crow Scholarship

I am so very grateful to receive the scholarship. As an international student, I try my best not to be a burden on my parents who are both retired. Your donation is making it possible for me to be more financially independent while focusing on my education. I simply do not know how to thank you enough. I have plans of taking on more research in the upcoming school year as well as enriching my concentration knowledge in linguistics and learning new languages.

— PHUONG N.
Recipient of the Connie Holt Jones Scholarship

I am currently pursuing a double major in accounting and finance. At the age of 15 I started my own lawn care business…a young man with a strong work ethic at an unbeatable price could not go unnoticed. I slowly expanded my business, accepting any work my customers presented me with… My lawn care business has given me many opportunities; however the greatest was leading me to my future career. One of my first customers was a financial advisor. She asked me what I was doing with the profits generated from my business…. I learned an abundance of knowledge from her over the past 4 years and she inspired me to become a financial advisor. I want to help young people achieve their financial goals. I was very fortunate to have had this opportunity because most other individuals my age don’t usually start investing their money until they have their first full time job or later.

— NOAH B.
Recipient of the Dean Earl and Edna Ludlow Business Scholarship

I have gained a passion for providing excellent nursing care, become more dedicated to living a life of service, and learned strong leadership skills that extend to all aspects of my life… After graduating with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing, I hope to find a job in a large intensive care unit to expand upon the skills I have learned in school and to improve my critical thinking abilities. I fell in love with nursing because it allows me a step into peoples’ lives and the chance to love people and do good every day. I am excited to pursue a career in nursing anesthesia because I believe it the perfect balance of both the art and science of nursing and a rewarding career.

Going forward, the money from this scholarship will help me to continue my studies at Truman by easing the financial stress that college can put on a student… After graduation, I plan to serve in the Peace Corps for a few years before attending law school. Once I graduate with my law degree, I intend to perform a mixture of law practice, sociological research, and pursue a political career in public office. Thank you for making this scholarship and my educational dreams possible.

— JACOB B.
Recipient of the Phi Sigma Kappa Initiate Scholarship

I was overjoyed when I received the news that I was chosen to receive the Dr. Angela A. DeVito Memorial Scholarship for the next academic year. It is difficult to put into words the feeling of relief that came over me as I read and then re-read the email, assuring myself that there was no mistake. This scholarship means a world of difference for me and my time at Truman. With these much-needed funds, I will be able to continue my degree at Truman and to pursue my dream of going to law school. Additionally, this scholarship made it a realistic option for me to study abroad next year in Spain; bringing me one step closer to completing my Spanish minor and a career in immigration law.

— HOPE L.
Recipient of the Dr. Angela A. DeVito Memorial Scholarship

My career plan is to either go to graduate school to pursue my Master’s in Health Administration degree or get started in entrepreneurship. I want to be the coordinator of a nursing home or hospice center one day. A lifelong personal goal of mine is to eventually launch my very own nonprofit organization that helps food banks gather food from grocery stores that they no longer can put on their shelves. I interned at a food bank in high school and the need for a centralized food gathering service was apparent to me. I am applying for this award because I am in need of financial assistance in order to continue to pursue my dreams and I hope that if I were blessed to win this award, that I would make the donors proud with the difference I one day make in the world.

— DREW J.
